Thanks for all of your generous support for the Fondy Food Pantry food drive during our 10th Anniversary Decade Party on February 18th!
Donations went to support the Food for Thought program in the Fond du Lac area. This program provides nutritious and child-pleasing nonperishable breakfasts, lunches and snacks for elementary children on the weekends and holidays during the school year. Recipients are qualifying children who meet the federal eligibility requirements for free and reduced lunches. The Fondy Food Pantry collects and packages the items then delivers them to area elementary schools each week, fighting hunger and helping kids reach their academic potential.
Lori Thiel, managing partner at Open Road Harley-Davidson® heard about the program and wanted to help drive awareness and donations to Food for Thought. She reached out to Jenkins to pitch a food drive opportunity in conjunction with our 10th Anniversary Decade Party. She knew the high traffic and generous hearts of local riders could make a difference!
Food Pantry volunteers got some premium real estate in the dealership showroom during the event. As added incentive, customers got raffle entries for every five food items or five dollars they donated. Each entry was a chance to win an Open Road Harley-Davidson® gift basket full of Harley-Davidson® themed goodies!
The drive had a great response - you all really showed up to support this cause!
All told, the Fondy Food Pantry collected over 630 food items and $645 in donations from Open Road Harley-Davidson® friends and customers. One partygoer even volunteered to help deliver the take-home meals to participating schools – how great is that?
According to Lynn Jenkins, Fondy Food Pantry food drive coordinator, there are currently 670 children being served through this program. However, Jenkins notes that the need is much greater – up to 3,000 children in Fond du Lac County qualify to receive weekend meals, but the program budget can serve only about 23% of that population.
Jenkins notes that the next food drive for the Fondy Food Pantry is the Postal Food Drive in May. In the meantime, those wishing to support the Food for Thought program can drop off donations at the Fondy Food Pantry, located at 51 W. Division Street (St. Paul’s Cathedral) in Fond du Lac. Go to www.fondyfoodpantry.org/food_for_thought to find out more about the program and see the list of suggested donation items. You can also volunteer your time to help package and distribute the items. Call the Food Pantry at (920) 322-0369 to learn more.
